Looking for a free book? Visit us on Saturday, March 1 because the 21st Century Packhorse Librarians will be setting up shop from 11:00 until 2:00. The free, family-friendly event will take place at our new location at 78-C Catawba Avenue, Old Fort, NC. The event will bring a variety of books ranging from children’s board books, young adults, adult fiction, poetry, and more!
Kirsten Turner, a native of North Carolina, wanted to help after the destruction of Hurricane Helene. She was inspired by the Packhorse Librarians of the 1930s to bring books to the community. The 1930s version was part of the Works Progress Administration programs delivering books to the communities of the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky while employing roughly 200 women. Often these women rode or walked into town on horses or mules loaded with books. On Saturday, Turner will be loaded with books but on a trailer instead of a horse.
